INTERACTIVE OVERVIEW

Choose a rule.

ANY MODE OF TRANSPORT

FCA · Free Carrier

The seller delivers the goods to the buyer's carrier at the named place.

RISK TRANSFER · FCA

Risk transfers when the goods are delivered to the carrier or other person nominated by the buyer at the precisely agreed place and point.

SELLER

Clear the goods for export and deliver them to the nominated carrier at the agreed point.

BUYER

Arrange the main carriage, import clearance and onward delivery from the handover point.

INSURANCE

No mandatory cargo insurance; either party may insure its risk.

USE THE RULE CORRECTLY

Incoterms® divide delivery responsibilities — not the entire deal.

They allocate selected obligations, risk and costs between seller and buyer. They do not determine ownership, payment terms, product specifications, remedies for breach or every requirement of the contract of sale.

For containerised or multimodal shipments, FCA is often more appropriate than FOB because delivery normally occurs at a terminal or carrier handover before the container is placed on board.
